About
The TCDA Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) Program was created to raise the standard of rock climbing instruction in Thailand and support the growth of safe, professional single pitch climbing experiences. Developed by the Thailand Climbing Development Association (TCDA) with support from Progression, the program is modeled after the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) SPI framework and is designed for active climbers who want to teach, guide, and manage groups in single pitch outdoor climbing settings. More than a climbing course, the SPI Program focuses on instructor development through training in teaching techniques, professionalism, risk management, group facilitation, site management, Leave No Trace principles, and basic rescue skills.

PROGRAM DETAILS
WHO THIS PROGRAM
IS FOR
The SPI Course is not a “climbing” course. It is an instructor training course for active, proficient rock climbers and for current climbing instructors who wish to gain SPI certification. The SPI course presents many instructor specific topics such as professionalism, teaching techniques, risk management, group site organization, climbing site conservation/LNT and assistance/rescue skills.
PREREQUISITES

TCDA Professional Membership

Must be 18 years or older

Minimum of 1 year in rock climbing

Experienced in at least 40 lead rock climbing routes, graded at 5s - 6B.

Demonstrates the ability to efficiently lead routes at the grade between 5C - 6A/+.

Must possess at least a 6A lead climbing onsight.

Undergone basic First Aid training with a valid certification.

Possess accidental insurance. (Optional but recommended)
DURATION & FEES
The SPI Program consists of a 3-days (27 hour) training course and a separate 2-days (16 hour) assessment. Certification is valid for three years as long as the candidate keeps current TCDA Membership and First Aid Certification. After three years, current SPIs can re-take the SPI Assessment to renew SPI certification.
